DOUBLES FINAL NOTES
Top-seeded Bob and Mike Bryan captured their first Sony Ericsson Open title with a hard-fought 6-7(7), 6-3, 10-7 (Match TB) victory over No. 6 seeds Martin Damm and Leander Paes in Miami on Saturday.
The Bryan brothers clinched their 36th career title and their sixth ATP Masters Series shield in one hour and 37 minutes. They had lost to Jonas Bjorkman and Max Mirnyi in last year’s Miami final.
They now have an ATP-best three titles for the season, and maintain their lead in the Stanford ATP Doubles Race. They will split $185,000 in prize money.
The pair is 17-2 on the season with other titles at the Australian Open and Las Vegas. They improve their career record to 398-165.
The Bryans are 6-8 lifetime in ATP Masters Series finals and they have reached the title match in all nine Masters Series tournaments.
Damm and Paes, the No. 2 team in the Stanford ATP Doubles Race, were playing in their second straight ATP Masters Series final after clinching the Indian Wells title two weeks ago.
The Czech-Indian squad fall to 20-5 for the year (49-23 career record). They have captured one other ATP titles this year in Rotterdam and finished runner-up in Doha.
Damm and Paes had been attempting to become the first team since Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor in 2002 to capture back-to-back ATP Masters Series titles in Indian Wells and Miami.
The Bryans converted three of four break points, while saving three of four break points they faced. The Americans won 73 points in total, compared to 71 points for Damm-Paes.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Mike Bryan: “This is great. It's one of the tournaments where we really broke onto the scene. Back in '99 we made the quarters. We were stoked. Eight years later, we finally won this title.”

Bob Bryan: “[Our] next goal is Davis Cup. We want to advance to the next round. We've got that in our sights all year long. Then, you know, we want to finish No. 1 again. A lot of teams are on our heels. And to finish No. 1, you've got to have a consistent season. But at least to win another Grand Slam and just play well all year long, then obviously next year qualify for the Olympics.”
