No. 13 Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) v Jan Hernych (CZE)

On court today…

·         2003 champion Juan Carlos Ferrero, whose clay court highlights this season include a runner-up finish at Costa do Sauipe, has a first-time meeting with Amer Delic. The American is making his Roland Garros debut today.

·         AMS Rome runner-up Fernando Gonzalez bids to recreate the Grand Slam form that took him all the way to the 2007 Australian Open final. He plays Radek Stepanek, still on the comeback trail following a four-month lay-off due to a back injury at the end of last year.

·        Ivan Ljubicic, who broke through to reach his first Grand Slam semifinal at last year’s Roland Garros, takes on one of the 21 Frenchmen in the men’s draw when he plays Arnaud Clement. Clement is returning for his tenth Roland Garros after missing last year’s tournament with a torn left adductor.

·        Another Frenchman, 2006 quarterfinalist Julien Benneteau who receives his first Grand Slam seeding here, faces Carlos Berlocq. The Argentine is looking for his first victory in a major at his fourth attempt.

·         Marat Safin, a semifinalist here in 2002, plays lucky loser Fernando Vicente. Safin has not won back-to-back matches since March, while his Spanish opponent is hoping to break an 11-match losing streak at tour level, and a run of four straight first round losses in Grand Slam events.

·         Munich finalist Mikhail Youzhny hopes to continue the good form which has already seen him reach three finals this year. He gets underway against Jan Hernych, who has won one match in two previous Roland Garros appearances.

·         Safin is making his ninth appearance at Roland Garros. He lost in the first round here for the first time last year, falling to Fernando Gonzalez 63 16 63 61.

·         Safin’s best Roland Garros result is reaching the semifinals in 2002, defeating Sebastien Grosjean 63 62 62 in the quarterfinals before losing to Juan Carlos Ferrero 63 62 64.

·         Safin’s season highlight so far was advancing to the semifinals at Las Vegas, losing to Lleyton Hewitt 75 61. That was the last time he won consecutive matches in a tournament – since then he has lost his first match at three events, and his second match at three more.

·         Safin has played four clay court tournaments ahead of 2007 Roland Garros, losing in the second round at all three Masters Series events on the surface: at AMS Monte Carlo to Kristof Vliegen 06 76 64, at AMS Rome to countryman Nikolay Davydenko 76 75, and at AMS Hamburg to Juan Carlos Ferrero 63 76(15).

·         Safin has also played two Davis Cup ties on clay in 2007. He defeated Nicolas Massu 63 62 62 in the opening rubber of Russia’s first round tie away to Chile, before losing the fourth rubber to Fernando Gonzalez 63 75 64. In Russia’s home quarterfinal tie versus France in April, Safin defeated Paul-Henri Mathieu 76 63 62 in the decisive fifth rubber, handing defending champions Russia a place in the semifinals in September, where they will be at home to Germany.

·         Vicente is making his tenth successive appearance at Roland Garros. He lost in the first round last year, to Alexander Waske 64 46 76 76. It marked the second time he had lost in the first round of this event, having also done so in 2001 (l. Jens Knippschild 64 62 46 26 86).

·         Vicente had the best Grand Slam result of his career here in 2000, reaching the round of 16. He defeated Tim Henman 75 46 64 46 63 in the third round before losing to Yevgeny Kafelnikov 57 63 57 76 86.

·         Vicente is bidding to win his first match in a Grand Slam tournament since 2005 Roland Garros (where he reached the third round). He lost in the first round of all four majors in 2006.

·         Vicente was No. 23 seed in the 2007 Roland Garros qualifying tournament and lost in the final qualifying round to No. 3 seed Lukas Dlouhy 06 75 62. Along with Mariano Zabaleta, Juan-Pablo Guzman and Santiago Giraldo, he entered the main draw as a lucky loser due to the withdrawals of Andy Murray, Tommy Haas, Mardy Fish and Evgeny Korolev.

·         Vicente is bidding for his first tour-level victory since June 2006, when he defeated Martin Lee 63 62 at Queen’s. His subsequent loss to Lleyton Hewitt, 46 64 62 in the second round, marked the start of a 11-match losing streak at tour level, through his first round loss to Paul Goldstein, 63 67 63, at 2007 Barcelona. Vicente is 0-3 on the tour in 2007, his earlier first round losses being at Costa do Sauipe and Acapulco.

·         All but one of Vicente’s matches have been on clay this season. He has had more success on the challenger circuit, winning the title at San Luis Potosi (MEX) in April by defeating fellow Roland Garros lucky loser Santiago Giraldo 63 63 in the final. His last event before playing qualifying here was the Prague Challenger, where he lost in the first round to Ivo Minar 61 76.

·         Ferrero has recovered from his fall to as low as No. 98 in the rankings in February 2005, but hasn’t recaptured the form that took him to the title here in 2003 and is still searching for his first title since 2003 AMS Madrid.

·         Munich (see above) was Youzhny’s third final of the year. He won his third career title at Rotterdam on indoor hard court in February, defeating Ivan Ljubicic 62 64 in the final and a week later also reached the final at Dubai, also on hard court, losing to Roger Federer 64 63. This is the first time in his career that Youzhny has reached more than two finals in the same year and is reflected in the fact that he equalled his career-high ranking of No. 15 on 21 May.
