No. 1 Duke, defending champion Northwestern advance

MADISON, Wis. - The Quarterfinals have been set for the 16 teams competing in the 2010 ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship hosted by the University of Wisconsin at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

#1 Duke: Top-ranked Duke continued its early season dominance with a 6-1 win over host Wisconsin to advance to the quarterfinals to take on No. 8 USC. Duke maintained its unblemished doubles record earning the first point of the match by taking No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The duo of Amanda Granson and Ellah Nze were the first off the court with an 8-4 triumph. Granson, a senior, also battled back in singles after a tough first set and coasted through the second set to win 7-5, 6-2 for the clinching point for the Duke victory. Wisconsin picked up their solo point at No. 5 when Hannah Berner battled back from one set behind and edged Duke's Monica Gorny, 0-6, 6-2, 10-6.

#2 Northwestern:No. 2 Northwestern rolled to a 5-1 victory over No. 10 Tennessee in the opening round. NU (5-0), the tournament's second seed and defending champion, is now slated to meet No. 7 Florida. The match will be the Gators' second straight contest against a Big Ten foe after Florida defeated Michigan, 5-2, on Friday. Northwestern got off to a strong start in doubles to take the all-important 1-0 lead entering singles. Tennessee in turn posted its first win of the day when its No. 1 nationally ranked duo of Caitlin Whoriskey and Natalie Pluskota staved off a Northwestern's Elena Chernyakovaand Lauren Lui. Stacy Lee won in her singles debut at the ITA Indoor Team Championship, 6-1, 6-2, over Tennessee's Katie Lee. Mosolova brought her A-game to her match against sixth-ranked Whoriskey, against whom Mosolova split her two prior matches this season. Mosolova was dominant from the start, beating Whoriskey 6-2, 6-2, to send NU into the Quarters.

#3 California:No. 3 California (5-0) earned a 5-2 victory over ninth-ranked Georgia Tech (5-1) to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinal against No. 12 UCLA (6-0). Cal has now defeated Georgia Tech the last three times the teams have met. The Bears came out of the gates with three strong victories on the doubles courts in order to earn the first point of the day. No. 83-ranked Mari Andersson sent Cal into the quarterfinal when she defeated Viet Ha Ngo at the third court, 6-0, 6-3. With the outcome decided, Georgia Tech put a second point on the board as the top-ranked Falconi snapped second-ranked Juricova's nine-match singles winning streak with a 7-6, 7-5 win at court one. Falconi edged Juricova for the first set by winning the tiebreaker, 9-7. The two have been ranked No. 1 and No. 2 all spring and each claimed ITA Singles Championships this past fall as Falconi won at the ITA/Riviera All-American and Juricova edged Falconi at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoors.

#5 Baylor: No. 5 Baylor advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 5-2 first-round win over No. 20 Florida State in the first round. The Lady Bears kicked the match off on the right foot sweeping all three doubles matches in convincing fashion. Taylor Ormond gave the Bears a 2-0 lead in team points with a straight-sets win at No. 4 singles over FSU's Federica Suess 6-4, 6-2 but the Seminoles didn't fold at that point, picking up two consecutive singles wins at the No. 2 and No. 6 positions. However, senior Lenka Broosova, currently ranked 17th in nation, who became Baylor's all-time wins leader in a victory over sixth-ranked Miami (FL), gutted out a 7-6, 6-3 win, before Filipiak secured the match victory, dropping just two games on her way to a 6-1, 6-1 win.

#7 Florida: The 7th-seeded Florida Gators defeated 16th-ranked Michigan, 5-2, to advance to the quarterfinals, where they play second-seeded Northwestern tomorrow. Florida swept all three doubles matches and captured the initial team point of the competition, something the Gators have done in every dual match this season. Singles 2 and 4 spots each won their matches in straight sets, setting up an opportunity for Claire Bartlett to clinch the team win for UF at the sixth position. Two of Bartlett's last four matches entering Friday's action have gone to three sets, and the Gator newcomer benefitted from that experience, as she provided the clinching victory with a 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-1 decision over Michelle Sulahian. Florida has won the ITA National Team Indoor Championships six times (1989, '91, '92, '96, '97, '99), with an overall record of 41-8.

#8 USC: No. 8 USC moved into the quarterfinals with a 5-2 victory over 14th-ranked Clemson. The Trojans got on the board first with the doubles point with the team of Alison Ramos and Danielle Lao taking down Josipa Bek and Nelly Ciolkowski, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles. After Lao helped clinch the doubles win for SC, 18th-ranked Lao put the final clamps on the Tigers defeating 113th-ranked Hadziselimovic at flight four, 6-3, 6-4, clinching the Trojan win, and giving Clemson's their first defeat of the season. The matchup between #9 Josipa Bek and #8 Maria Sanchez went to a third set as the deciding match went final with Sanchez pulling out victorious to defeat Bek in the matchup featuring the No. 8 and No. 9 ranked players in the nation.

North Carolina

: No. 11 North Carolina advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship with a 5-2 upset win over fourth-seeded Georgia. The win, Carolina's second over a top-10 opponent this season, sets up a quarterfinal matchup with fifth-seeded Baylor tomorrow. UNC (8-0) got on the board first, winning the doubles point for the eighth time in as many matches. With both teams claiming doubles victories, the point came down to No. 28 Jocelyn Ffriendand Haley Hemm, who were able to clinch the point for the Heels with an 8-5 win at No. 3. The Bulldogs made it 1-1 with a victory at No. 2 singles but it wouldn't stay tied for long, however, as Shinann Featherson, is 7-0 in dual match play this season and has yet to lose a set, continued her dominance at the No. 6 position before Jelena Durisicsealed the match with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Hyndman at No. 5 spot.

UCLA: The 12th-ranked UCLA Bruins collected the doubles point and three singles positions to claim a 4-3 upset win over No. 6 Miami (FL), advancing to the Quarterfinals to face fellow Golden State and Pac-10 rival, California. UCLA (6-0) claimed the all-important doubles point at the number one position when the 10th-ranked duo of Yasmin Schnack and Andrea Remynse took a hard-fought 9-7 upset win from Miami's third-ranked team of Gabriela Mejia and Laura Vallverdu. In singles, the Bruins claimed the match victory at the next spot, using No. 5 Yasmin Schnack's 7-5, 6-4, defeat of No. 7 Laura Vallverdu at the top singles position. After the Bruins reached the 4-0 score to clinch the match, the Hurricanes came to life, winning the final three singles matches to make the match a much-closer 4-3 final score.
