Final Facts
- Williams wins the 42nd Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title of her
career. The last time the 29-year-old successfully defended a title,
as she has in Dubai, was at Wimbledon in 2007-08.
- The title, her first since Acapulco just over 12 months ago, puts
Williams back in the lead for active leaders in singles titles on
the Tour - just ahead of Justine Henin's 41.
- Williams had lost her last three finals, while 20-year-old
Azarenka had won her last three. Williams is now 42-25 in Tour
singles finals, while Azarenka is 3-5.
- Williams had won her only previous meeting with Azarenka in
straight sets, at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
- Nuria Llagostera Vives and María José Martínez Sánchez capture
their first title of the year, and first since winning the Sony
Ericsson Championships in Doha last November. They have both now won
13 Tour doubles titles, including nine together.
- Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik, who upset top seeds Cara
Black and Liezel Huber in the semis, were playing their first final
together in their fourth tournament as a team.
Final Quotes
Venus Williams, 2010 Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships singles
champion:
"I expected her to come out and play well. I respect her game, the
effort she gives... even though I was leading in the second set, she
just never gave up. Obviously I'm happy to close the tournament out.
I've had a lot of success here the last two years, and I enjoy my
time off the courts too. I go to the Souqs and make the best of it.
So playing well here makes it even more satisfying for me."
Victoria Azarenka, 2010 Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships singles
runner-up:
"It was very high
quality tennis from both of us. I had a little bit of bad luck on a
few balls, but I'm proud of what I did today. It wasn't so much
about power, but more about the precision - she was hitting it so
close to the lines. She played too well today."
María José Martínez Sánchez, 2010
Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships doubles champion:
"In doubles, if you are focused all the time, you have a
chance in every game, and we changed the match. The Sony Ericsson
Championships in Doha was a very important tournament and we won.
This is the second Premier tournament since Doha and we won. So now
our next goal is to win a Grand Slam. Doesn't matter which one."
Nuria Llagostera Vives, 2010 Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships
doubles champion:
"We had good feelings about playing Cara and Liezel because the last
time we played them we won. But we knew today would also be very
tough, even if it wasn't them – and it was really tough. We knew
these two girls play very good doubles. For us, every single doubles
pair is dangerous. Doesn't matter who they are or what ranking they
have."
