Peer is Enjoying a
New Treatment in Dubai
Back
in 2009, a controversy of earthquake proportions hit Dubai when Israel’s
Shahar Peer was refused a visa to compete in the Dubai Duty Free
Championships. The tournament was hit with a record fine and threatened
with expulsion from the WTA Tour if such a thing was repeated - although
the decision had been taken by the government rather than the
tournament. Stung by the worldwide condemnation the country received,
Peer was granted permission to play in 2010 and 2011. This year her
ranking was not high enough to allow her direct entry, but she applied
for and received a wild card - a remarkable turnaround from four years
ago. Peer has always enjoyed her visits to Dubai, despite having to be
kept separated from the other players, staying in a different hotel and
playing all her matches on a heavily secured outside court.
Only
February and Most of the Top Women Have Had Injuries
It’s
only February, but most of the top 10 women have already suffered
injury. The Dubai Duty Free Championships lost Victoria Azarenka
(ankle), Petra Kvitova (virus), Li Na (back) and Vera Zvonareva (hip)
before they even played a match, and Marion Bartoli also limped out
after suffering a calf injury while playing in Doha last week. Jelena
Jankovic has also been playing with a muscle tear, Dominika Cibulkova
retired with a hamstring injury and Maria Kirilenko withdrew from
doubles with a neck injury.
Players Wonder If
Fed Cup Travel Causes Injuries
Tennis
knowledgeables such as Butch Buchholz and Cliff Drysdale are long time
advocates of Davis Cup (or the World Group at least) being truncated
into an exclusive two-week window with all matches played at the same
venue. Now Jelena Jankovic believes the same concept would work for the
Fed Cup. Jankovic recently had to fly from the warmth of Melbourne and
the Australian Open to represent Serbia in the winter chill of Charleroi
in Belgium. Then after the spring American double in Indian Wells and
Miami, she will head to Moscow for the quarter-finals against Russia.
After Injuries,
Lisicki Thinks About a Career Change
Sabine
Lisicki is currently doing a good job in her tennis after raising her
ranking more than 160 places during 2011 and reaching at least the final
16 in the last three Grand Slam
tournaments. But she is considering pursuing a possible career in sports
medicine once she lays down her competitive racket.
Of All Places in
the World to Live, Wozniacki and Azarenka are Monte Carlo Neighbors
Caroline
Wozniacki and Vika Azaranka keep the tennis talk to a minimum when they
occasionally meet up at their base in Monte Carlo, with the Dane saying
that the player who live within shouting distance of each other in the
principality have few chances to actually socialize at their homes.
"We're there maybe five weeks at the same time," said the Dane who is
defending here title at the Dubai Championships. "Daniela (Hantuchova)
is just living down the road as well. She's been there quite a bit at
well.
