Roddick Unsure of
Immediate Future
After
falling in the first round of Memphis as the defending champion on
Wednesday, Andy Roddick has now gone a year a without a title and is
ranked No. 27, his lowest mark since 2001.
Grunting and
Possible Gamesmanship Can Ruin a Friendship
Clearly
a week has done little to quell Agnieszka Radwanska’s anger at her
former good friend, world no.1 Victoria Azarenka. The sixth ranked Pole
stormed off court with a face like thunder following last week’s
semi-final defeat at the Qatar Total Open and after reaching the same
stage at the Dubai Duty Free Championships, she is still feeling less
than magnanimous.
After Three Years,
Not Everyone Favors On-Court Coaching
On-court
coaching has been again brought sharply into focus at this week’s Dubai
Duty Free Championships but three years after the WTA allowed players to
receive tactical advice or emotional reassurance during the course of a
match, several leading players refuse to buy into the concept. US Open
champion Samantha Stosur has never called her long-time coach David
Taylor onto court and never intends to break the trend. “I just don’t
agree with it,” said the Australian. “I like tradition and tennis is
supposed to be an individual sport. You can't do it in a Grand Slam and
those tournaments are the biggest ones we’ve got. I think if you got to
work things out through those, then you should almost be working that
way throughout the year.
Observing Lent Can
Bring on Surprising Abstinence Plans
It’s
the first week of Lent and Caroline Wozniacki has revealed she has
struck a demanding challenge with boyfriend Rory McIlroy. The former
tennis no.1 and the man who could end the week the world’s top ranked
golfer have agreed to forgo sweets, white bread, fried food, cakes,
chocolate and, although the pair rarely drink, alcohol.
Ivanovic is On a
Djokovic Gluten-Free Diet, Sort Of
Novak
Djokovic has got many players trying to follow in his footsteps and
adopting a gluten-free diet, after the success he has enjoyed since he
took it on. Ana Ivanovic is one, although she is not letting it dictate
her life.
"Well, I
try still to avoid pasta and I eat rice. But sometimes you don't have an
option, and I'll have a piece of bread if I'm starving and there is
nothing else to have," she said. "I just try not to be too obsessed
about it. I still try to eat healthy and I avoid some thing that I know
they are bad for me.
