The California Virus Continues to Hit the Tennis Community

It was survival of the fittest on the opening weekend at Indian Wells as a virus raged in the local Coachella valley.

Frenchman Gael Monfils was the highest-profile victim of the illness - which tournament officials were quick to say had nothing to do with their food service - withdrawing before his match with Nikolay Davydenko.

The tournament quickly found an agreeable medical opinion for their theory that food service is not involved.

 

Djokovic Yet to Commit to Davis Cup

Novak Djokovic will not commit yet to play Davis Cup against the Czech republic in Prague during the second weekend of April. The Czechs have announced that tie will be held on clay, which makes it more convenient for all the players as they will be headed into the clay court season post Miami, but Djokovic isn't sure who it will fit in his schedule, especially if he goes deep at the Sony Ericsson Open again.

 

 

Ivanovic Likes The Desert; It Helps Her Win

The grinding career comeback for former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic is gaining even more traction in the Californian desert - and the smiling Serb siren says the sunny ambience of desert venue has a lot do to with her success.

Ivanovic won the Indian Wells title in 2008 over Svetlana Kuznetsova and lost the final a year later to Vera Zvonareva. Her win against fellow former top-ranked player Caroline Wozniacki puts the Serb into her second consecutive quarter-final of the season.

 

Registration Opens March 15 to Qualify for the US Open

The USTA announced that registration for all 13 US Open National Playoffs Sectional Qualifying Tournaments opens today, Thursday, March 15. Players age 14 and older can register for singles competition and/or mixed doubles. Registration deadlines for the 13 sectional qualifying events vary by tournament. 

Registration for each of the 13 sectional qualifying tournaments is available at www.USOpen.org/NationalPlayoffs. The entry fee for each of the sectional qualifying tournaments is $100 for singles and $120 for each mixed doubles team ($60 per player).  All players competing must have a current USTA membership valid through August 27, 2012. 

 

Navratilova to Begin Dancing With The Stars Monday

AARP’s Fitness Ambassador Martina Navratilova will be competing on the new season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, which kicks off this Monday, March 19th.

Her sponsors are encouraging Navratilova’s fans to listen in and vote. She even has a twitter address;  @Martina.
