Thursday Men's Summary
Singles - Quarterfinal: (1) N Djokovic def. (12) N
Almagro 6-3 6-4
For eight games in the second set, Nicolas Almagro
managed to hang with Novak Djokovic. But, eventually, he
had a bad game, and that's one more than is generally
permissible against the world #1. Almagro loses his
chance for the Top Ten; the only player still with a
chance after this was the winner of the day's other
singles match:
Singles - Quarterfinal: (11) J Isner def. (13) G Simon
6-3 1-6 7-5
At this rate, John Isner could pass Mardy Fish this
spring to become the #1 American. He needs about 500
more points. A tall order, but he has already earned 360
here. He leaves Gilles Simon at #13. Isner himself is
still stuck at #11, which is where he came in, but he is
getting to be a fairly strong #11, who could still make
the Top Ten this week.
Doubles - Semifinal: M Lopez/Nadal def. (6) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski
6-2 6-0
Somehow, this place is magic for Marc Lopez and Rafael
Nadal. It's too bad, in a way, that Nadal doesn't play
more doubles.
