Thursday Women's Summary
Singles - Quarterfinal: (2) Maria Sharapova def. (20)
Maria Kirilenko 3-6 7-5 6-2
In the first set, Maria Sharapova seemed to have no idea
what to do with the ball. But, in the second set, Maria
Kirilenko had the trainer out to work on her ankle.
Those two factors balanced out to give us another three
hour match, but the bottom line is, Kirilenko rises only
to #22. Sharapova doesn't move at all, but her grip on
the #2 ranking is getting to be pretty strong.
Singles - Quarterfinal: (15) Ana Ivanovic def. (7)
Marion Bartoli 6-3 6-4
We had frankly expected Ana Ivanovic to fall in the
rankings this week; she was defending quarterfinalist
points. But she has added points. That doesn't mean she
will automatically rise, because Angelique Kerber has
been adding points, too. But at least Ivanovic has a
shot at the Top Fifteen. Marion Bartoli -- who came down
with something during this match; she had the doctor
out, and said things were spinning -- will stay at #7,
meaning that the Top Ten is final: Azarenka, Sharapova,
Kvitova, Radwanska, Stosur, Wozniacki, Bartoli, Li,
Zvonareva, Petkovic, in that order.
Doubles - Semifinal: (2) Mirza/Vesnina def. (3)
Hlavackova/Hradecka 5-7 7-5 10-3 (Match TB)
Second straight final here for Sania Mirza and Elena
Vesnina. They don't seem to get much recognition, but
they really have become a strong doubles team.
