Friday Women's Summary
Singles - Semifinal: (1) Victoria Azarenka def. (18)
Angelique Kerber 6-4 6-3
For about seven games, the New Model Kerber managed to
hang with Victoria Azarenka. Then Azarenka did what she
has been doing all year, and that was that. Still, we
show Kerber up to a career-high #15.
Singles - Semifinal: (2) Maria Sharapova def. (15) Ana
Ivanovic 6-4 0-1 retired (Left Hip Injury)
Ana Ivanovic started to feel this problem in the first
set, tried to get it treated, and found it was no use.
She sounds as if she might not be fit for Miami, either.
Regrettable, since she was getting close to a return to
the Top Fifteen. No chance now. Maria Sharapova was
going to be #2 no matter what happened here, but this
win significantly increases her lead over Petra Kvitova.
It's going to be very difficult for Kvitova to regain
the #2 spot this spring, let alone take the #1 ranking
she seemed destined for last fall.
Doubles - Semifinal: (1) Huber/Raymond def. Benesova/Zahlavova
Strycova 6-1 6-2
It's going to be quite an interesting final: The world's
top team (Huber/Raymond) versus the defending champions
(Mirza/Vesnina). Huber/Raymond looked a lot better in
the semifinal, but they also faced a weaker team.
