Thursday Women's Summary
Singles - Semifinal: (2) Maria Sharapova def. (4)
Caroline Wozniacki 4-6 6-2 6-4
If you want to understand this
more-than-two-and-a-half-hour match, perhaps the most
striking statistic is that there were no aces at all.
There were ten breaks, and Caroline Wozniacki in
particular struggled, winning only 52% of service
points. She will not be rising above her current #6.
Maria Sharapova won't rise above #2, either, but with
Victoria Azarenka finally having lost a match, Sharapova
will actually gain a little ground this week.
Singles - Semifinal: (5) Agnieszka Radwanska def. (7)
Marion Bartoli 6-4 6-2
At first it looked as if Marion Bartoli really could put
up a fight. The first half of the first set was long and
close. Then Agnieszka Radwanska took control. Which
means that Marion Bartoli will remain #7, and Radwanska
#4.
#4, but with a lot of potential to go higher. Radwanska
is now less than 800 points behind #3 Petra Kvitova. Win
the final and the gap is less than 500 points. And
Radwanska has been looking very solid this year, and
Kvitova has looked poor. If this continues, Radwanska
will probably go higher. Who knows -- if she can beat
Sharapova in the final, she might even have a shot at
Sharapova's #2 ranking when Rome comes off....
