Wednesday Summary
Singles - Third Round: (14) Polona Hercog def. (3)
Marion Bartoli 6-4 1-6 6-4
There doesn't seem much doubt now: Polona Hercog is
finally back. Ironically, she doesn't gain anything; she
is still stuck at #37. Marion Bartoli was #7 win or
lose.
Singles - Third Round: (4) Vera Zvonareva def. (Q)
Stefanie Voegele 5-7 6-3 6-4
Vera Zvonareva came perilously close to losing the #9
ranking here -- and she emphatically isn't out of the
woods yet, because she has only now matched her
sixteenth event score, whereas Serena Williams has been
adding points all along:
Singles - Third Round: (5) Serena Williams def. (17)
Marina Erakovic 6-2 6-2
This moves Serena ahead of Vera Zvonareva in the contest
for #9. Marina Erakovic should end up within one spot of
#44.
Singles - Third Round: (6) Sabine Lisicki def. (Q)
Yaroslava Shvedova 7-5 6-4
Sabine Lisicki has started to add points, but she needs
two more wins to move in the rankings.
Singles - Third Round: (13) Nadia Petrova def. (8)
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (WC) 6-1 6-4
It's back into the rut for Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who
loses her Top Twenty chance. Nadia Petrova is up to
probably #32.
Singles - Third Round: (9) Lucie Safarova def.
Aleksandra Wozniak 6-2 6-7(4-7) 6-1
There is no question now. Lucie Safarova is Top 25. But
Aleksandra Wozniak remains below #55.
Singles - Third Round: (WC) Venus Williams def.
Anastasia Rodionova 7-5 6-2
No surprise after what Venus has done lately. The next
rounds get more interesting. Venus and Serena will meet
in the semifinal if they win their next matches. Even if
one of them loses, Venus has already earned enough
points here to rise to around #72.
