Friday Summary
Singles - Third Round: (2) Samantha Stosur def.
Galina Voskoboeva 6-3 4-6 6-2
This match was halted by rain the night before, and
Samantha Stosur's lead from Thursday was the main thing
that won her the first set. She didn't look particularly
good in the second, either, but she had just enough time
to get back on course. She leaves Galina Voskoboeva
around #44.
Singles - Quarterfinal: (2) Samantha Stosur def. (WC)
Venus Williams 6-3 4-6 6-3
Pretty impressive for Samantha Stosur: More than two
sets in her first match, then winning a two and a
quarter hour match here. In the process, she prevented a
Williams/Williams matchup. It's hard to imagine Stosur
will have much left for Saturday, but she can't move
above #5 this week anyway, so maybe it doesn't matter
much.
Singles - Quarterfinal: (9) Lucie Safarova def. (4) Vera
Zvonareva 6-3 6-3
The disasters just keep coming for Vera Zvonareva. She
falls to #10, with Serena Williams up to #9. Lucie
Safarova is still at #24; another win would take her to
#23.
Singles - Quarterfinal: (5) Serena Williams def. (6)
Sabine Lisicki 4-1, retired (ankle)
There's something you don't see too often: Serena
Williams the healthier player on the court! She leaves
Sabine Lisicki still stuck at #13.
Singles - Quarterfinal: (14) Polona Hercog def. (13)
Nadia Petrova 6-1 6-2
Still not much movement for Polona Hercog, but she
should rise to ##6, and she finally seems to be on track
again.
Doubles - Quarterfinal: (1) Huber/Raymond def.
Jans-Ignacik/Kudryavtseva 7-5 6-2
The best surface to beat Huber/Raymond is certainly
clay, but it obviously didn't make much difference here.
Doubles - Quarterfinal: Grandin/Uhlirova def. (2)
Peschke/Srebotnik 7-6(10-8) 6-2
Obviously Katarina Srebotnik still has a few things to
work on.
Doubles - Quarterfinal: (WC) Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova
def. (3) Mirza/Vesnina 6-7(2-7) 7-5 10-7 (Match TB)
Doubles - Quarterfinal: Medina Garrigues/Shvedova def.
(4) Hlavackova/Hradecka 7-6(7-2) 6-3
Last week, Yaroslava Shvedova lost to her usual doubles
partner Vania King. Here, she beat King in the first
round, and now has a win over a Top Ten team. That must
feel pretty good....
