Sunday Summary
Singles - Final: (5) Serena Williams def. (9) Lucie
Safarova 6-0 6-1
Good thing the audience had already paid for its
tickets, eh? This took a hair less than an hour, and
Serena Williams won two-thirds of the points. What can
you say about such a match? We can at least say that it
is Serena's first title since last year's Canadian Open,
and her first on clay since she won here all the way
back in 2008. A fitting occasion for her to rise to #9.
It will probably be quite a while before she can go any
higher, though; she is well behind #8.
Lucie Safarova will rise to #23, but she fails to win
her first big title; indeed, she hasn't won anything at
all since mid-2008. Which may explain why she didn't
really seem to be there....
Singles - Final: (WC) Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova def.
Medina Garrigues/Shvedova 5-7 6-4 10-6 (Match TB)
It took some work, but at least Lucie Safarova earned a
title at Charleston. That's perhaps even a bigger deal
than the singles title, for her -- because she never won
a doubles title before. Not at the Tour level, anyway;
she did it in a Challenger. But it's nice to have that
honest-to-gosh trophy, just to say, "Yes, I could win in
doubles too." Pavlyuchenkova didn't have that problem,
but she wins her first doubles title since January 2011.
