Porsche Tennis Grand Prix
Tuesday Summary

Singles - First Round: (5) Samantha Stosur def. Peng Shuai 6-2 6-2
Add Peng Shuai to the list of players who could have played Fed Cup for all it matters. This leaves her Top 25 ranking in some danger.

Singles - First Round: (7) Marion Bartoli def. (Q) Iveta Benesova 6-3 6-2
Iveta Benesova will remain right around #44.

Singles - First Round: (8) Li Na def. Lucie Safarova 7-6(7-4) 6-4
Lucie Safarova played Fed Cup; Li Na didn't. This was close enough that you wonder if it might not have made the difference. It certainly costs Lucie Safarova her Top Twenty chance.

Singles - First Round: Francesca Schiavone def. Monica Niculescu 6-3 7-5
Monica Niculescu was defending more than a hundred points, so this could cost her her Top Thirty spot. Francesca Schiavone can't move above #11 this week no matter what.

Singles - First Round: Angelique Kerber def. Roberta Vinci 6-2 6-3
Roberta Vinci was defending a title this week, so this hits her hard. #18 coming in, she falls to no better than (although, it appears, no worse than) #23. Angelique Kerber remains at #14 -- she needs a semifinal to climb. If she can make that, though, she will become Germany's #2 player (ahead of Sabine Lisicki but behind Andrea Petkovic).

Singles - First Round: Julia Goerges def. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 5-7 6-3 6-4
Given how much Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has been struggling, this is not a good sign for Julia Goerges. But it is perhaps a slight help to Goerges's hopes of returning to the Top Twenty -- which, due to the losses by Peng, Safarova, Pavlyuchenkova, and Vinci, now look pretty good.

Singles - First Round: Andrea Petkovic def. (WC) Kristina Barrois 6-1 6-4
Good news for Andrea Petkovic after her layoff, although she will need more than this to move in the rankings.

Singles - First Round: (Q) Greta Arn def. (LL) Kateryna Bondarenko 7-5 6-3
Kateryna Bondarenko made the main draw when Flavia Pennetta pulled out -- but couldn't take advantage of what should have been one of the best spots in the draw.

Singles - First Round: (Q) Alize Cornet def. (Q) Anna Chakvetadze 6-3 6-4
Merely qualifying will take Anna Chakvetadze to around #375, but she clearly still has a long way to go.

Doubles - First Round: (1) Peschke/Srebotnik def. Klepac/Rosolska 6-0 6-2
That's the best we've seen from Peschke/Srebotnik lately. Maybe Katarina Srebotnik is finally coming around.

Doubles - First Round: Dulko/Suarez def. (4) Grandin/Uhlirova 7-6(7-4) 6-4
Paola Suarez has been climbing fast. We can probably expect her to climb even faster now that we're on clay!

Doubles - First Round: (5) Benesova/Zahlavova Strycova def. Gajdosova/Hantuchova 6-3 6-2
Benesova/Zahlavova Strycova were promoted after Mirza/Pennetta withdrew. Looks like they deserved it.
