Estoril
Monday Summary
MEN
Singles - First Round: (5) D Istomin def. P Mathieu 7-5
6-1
Denis Istomin has never shown much liking for clay, so
this is a pretty good win for him. No points yet,
though. His next win will count.
Singles - First Round: (6) R Haase def. S Bolelli 6-3
6-2
Robin Haase's situation is like Istomin's: No points
yet, but the next win will add to his total.
Singles - First Round: P Lorenzi def. E Roger-Vasselin
3-6 7-6(7-2) 6-4
Paolo Lorenzi picks up only his second ATP win since
Rome last year!
WOMEN
The upsets came thick and fast in the qualifying here.
Two were official upsets: #5 Heather Watson beat #1
Sloane Stephens 4-6 6-4 6-2 and Kristina Barrois took
out #8 Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino 6-4 2-6 6-2. The other
two matches didn't involve seeds, but certainly it was a
surprise to see Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor beat Estrella
Cabeza Candela 6-3 6-3. The only result that wasn't a
modest shock came as Karin Knapp beat Mariana
Duque-Marino 6-3 7-6(7-3).
Stephens will still make the main draw as a Lucky Loser.
#8 seed Mona Barthel has withdrawn; Polona Hercog has
been promoted into her spot as the #9 seed, and Stephens
gets a draw spot.
Singles - First Round: (1) Roberta Vinci def. (WC) Nina
Bratchikova 6-1 1-6 6-4
Roberta Vinci just fell out of the Top Twenty, but if
she can win even one more match, she is likely to make
it back.
Singles - First Round: (7) Nadia Petrova def. (WC)
Barbara Luz 6-0 6-1
Nadia Petrova lost her Madrid opener, so she is already
earning points. She is close to returning to the Top
Thirty.
Singles - First Round: Vania King def. Johanna Larsson
6-6(6-8) 6-3 6-0
Vania King has 110 points to defend this week, so she
will need more than this to stay above #55.
Singles - First Round: Carla Suarez Navarro def. Olga
Govortsova 6-4 6-4
This will take Carla Suarez Navarro to #55 or so.
Singles - First Round: Silvia Soler-Espinosa def. Sorana
Cirstea 6-4 6-4
A significant upset -- and a bad one for Sorana Cirstea,
who was defending 150 points. She will fall to around
#45.
Doubles - First Round: (2) Mirza/Rodionova def.
Daniilidou/Klepac 6-2 6-7(5-7) 10-5 (Match TB)
A much better result for Sania Mirza than her first
post-Vesnina doubles match.
Doubles - First Round: (3) Shvedova/Voskoboeva def.
Camerin/Knapp 6-3 6-1
Doubles - First Round: (4) Gajdosova/Hlavackova def.

Doubles - First Round: Chuang/Zhang def. (WC) Moura/Vale
Costa 6-0 6-1

Arruabarrena-Vecino/Medina Garrigues 7-6(7-5) 3-6 11-9
(Match TB)
