Estoril
Wednesday Summary
Singles - Second Round: (1) Sara Errani def. (Q) Melinda
Czink 6-4 1-6 6-1
We gave you the basic news yesterday; Sara Errani needs
a semifinal to gain any points. On the other hand, she
is the only seed left in the top half of the draw. If
she makes the final, she ought to be Top 25.
Singles - Second Round: Elena Vesnina def. (2) Ksenia
Pervak 6-2 6-3
For once, it looks as if Elena Vesnina actually stepped
up and showed what she could do. The loss means that
Ksenia Pervak will not rise above her current #38.
Singles - Second Round: Barbora Zahlavova Strycova def.
(4) Klara Zakopalova 6-3 6-3
Klara Zakopalova stays stuck right around #45.
Singles - Second Round: (5) Marina Erakovic def. (Q)
Akgul Amanmuradova 6-0 retired (right elbow injury)
Akgul Amanmuradova loses her Top Hundred chance, but
Marina Erakovic is now just below the Top Forty.
Singles - Second Round: (6) Petra Martic def. Hsieh
Su-Wei 6-4 6-1
Petra Martic is now absolutely guaranteed to hit the Top
Fifty.
Singles - Second Round: Aleksandra Wozniak def.
Alexandra Cadantu 6-7(2-7) 6-0 6-0
This is starting to look like one of those plague weeks
-- although all the retirements seem to have been due to
injury, not illness. Whatever the story here, Aleksandra
Wozniak appears almost certain to rise above #55.
Singles - Second Round: Anna Tatishvili def. (WC) Vanda
Lukacs 6-1 6-2
No news here. Just beating an even-lower-ranked wildcard
in the first round should take Vanda Lukacs from #980 to
around #625.
Singles - Second Round: Alberta Brianti def. Lesia
Tsurenko 5-7 7-5 6-4
This will put Alberta Brianti back in the Top Hundred.
Doubles - First Round: Husarova/Rybarikova def.
Hsieh/Hsieh 6-7(5-7) 6-2 10-5 (Match TB)
Doubles - Quarterfinal: Birnerova/Krajicek def. (1)
Grandin/Uhlirova 6-1 6-2
We have to think that the bug that hit in the singles
struck in the doubles, too....
Doubles - Quarterfinal: Begu/Minella def. (4)
Chan/Fujiwara 6-4 3-6 10-6 (Match TB)
It's almost as if Irina-Camelia Begu, having created a
glass ceiling for herself in singles, has suddenly
turned herself into a top doubles player. Chan/Fujiwara
had a first round walkover, so they come out of this
with no points.
Doubles - Quarterfinal: Marosi/Tatishvili def.
Dekmeijere/Kondratieva 4-6 6-0 10-3 (Match TB)
