Monday Men's Tennis Summary
Madrid
Singles - First Round: (11) N Almagro def. (Q) S Giraldo
6-7(5-7) 6-3 6-3
Nicolas Almagro has very little chance of rising in the
rankings here -- he would need at least a semifinal and
possibly more, and he was complaining about the blue
clay -- but he improves the odds that he will at least
keep the #13 ranking.
Singles - First Round: (Q) D Gimeno-Traver def. (Q) V
Hanescu 7-6(7-3) 4-6 6-3
This appears to mean no return to the Top Hundred for
Victor Hanescu.
Singles - First Round: (WC) G Garcia-Lopez def. M
Baghdatis 6-4 3-6 6-4
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez's ranking just took another hit,
so this has to feel very good indeed. He leaves Marcos
Baghdatis still below #40. Not much chance Baghdatis
will earn a Roland Garros seed now.
Singles - First Round: V Troicki def. D Young 6-1 4-6
6-1
Viktor Troicki defends his points. So does Donald Young,
and even adds a few. That probably means Young will stay
Top Fifty. But he obviously won't climb much.
Singles - First Round: M Youzhny def. (WC) J Marti 6-3
6-2
Mikhail Youzhny is already adding points, so he is
edging toward a Roland Garros seed. This alone probably
won't do it, though.
Singles - First Round: (WC) R Harrison def. (Q) S
Stakhovsky 7-6(7-3) 7-6(7-5)
Nice that Ryan Harrison gave the Americans one player in
the second round....
Singles - First Round: (Q) I Andreev def. J Ferrero 6-4
7-6(7-4)
This sort of makes you wonder if Juan Carlos Ferrero
will be back next year. He will remain stuck around #50.
Singles - First Round: (Q) A Falla def. J Chela 6-3 2-6
6-2
Juan Ignacio Chela was defending third round points, so
this will drop him to probably not much above #40. It's
a major blow to his Roland Garros seeding hopes.
Doubles - First Round: S Gonzalez/Kas def. Marach/Peya
3-6 6-4 10-8 (Match TB)
Doubles - First Round: Cabal/Schwank def. Anderson/Isner
6-4 7-6(7-4)
It looks as if John Isner needs to get Sam Querrey back
for doubles....
