INTERNAZIONALI BNL D'ITALIA
Tuesday Men's Tennis Summary
Singles - First Round: (10) J del Potro def. M Llodra 7-5 3-6 6-4
Juan Martin del Potro starts his push for the #8 Roland Garros seed -- but he's still a couple of wins behind Janko Tipsarevic.
Singles - First Round: (11) G Simon def. D Young 6-2 7-5
Two more wins might just possibly put Gilles Simon in the Top Ten. And he would stand even higher than that in the Roland Garros seed list if it took clay results into account....
Singles - First Round: (14) J Monaco def. (Q) A Ungur 6-2 6-2
Given the next result and the Verdasco result, it appears Juan Monaco has now absolutely clinched his Top 16 Roland Garros seed.
Singles - First Round: M Granollers def. (15) F Lopez 6-4 6-4
As we were working on our Roland Garros preparations, we took a look at clay points earned in the last year. We knew Feliciano Lopez was weak -- but only 345 clay points? Little wonder he's out. That means he won't rise above #17 -- and that means he'll need a withdrawal if he is to earn one of the Top 16 Roland Garros seeds. Of course, with those clay numbers, he probably shouldn't be a high seed....
Singles - First Round: (16) R Gasquet def. J Melzer 6-1 7-6(8-6)
This loss may well cost Jurgen Melzer his Roland Garros seed -- we show him at #33, and with several players who still have reasonable chances to pass him.
Singles - First Round: (Q) G Garcia-Lopez def. P Andujar 6-4 6-1
Pablo Andujar really does seem to have hit a wall all of a sudden. This should have been a winnable match. Instead, he loses his hope for a Roland Garros seed -- he will be no better than #36.
Singles - First Round: (Q) S Querrey def. J Nieminen 7-6(7-4) 5-7 6-4
There seems to be something about Americans and three-set matches here. At least Sam Querrey and John Isner both won theirs. For Jarkko Nieminen, this means he will stay not much above #50.
Singles - First Round: L Kubot def. P Starace 6-3 5-7 6-2
Potito Starace has fallen to not much above #100, and the clay season is almost over. This was a match he really needed to win; he is in danger of falling a lot lower....
Singles - Second Round: (1) N Djokovic def. B Tomic 6-3 6-3
Bernard Tomic should be Top Thirty next week, but this means that he will not be earning a Top 24 Roland Garros seed.
Singles - Second Round: (4) A Murray def. D Nalbandian 6-1 4-6 7-5
Andy Murray's back must be much improved if he survived this. Of course, a very lucky net cord didn't hurt.... Count David Nalbandian out of the Roland Garros seed hunt; he'll be around #40.
Singles - Second Round: (5) J Tsonga def. V Troicki 6-3 6-2
Because Rome 2011 was already off, this costs Viktor Troicki an optional event -- and it appears that that will cost him his Top Thirty ranking. His Roland Garros seed looks pretty safe, at least.
Singles - Second Round: (6) D Ferrer def. F Verdasco 6-3 7-6(7-3)
The bad news is, Fernando Verdasco loses the chance to clinch the #16 Roland Garros seed. The good news is, the loss by Feliciano Lopez makes it highly likely that he will earn it despite the loss. For David Ferrer, this keeps alive his hopes of retaining the #6 ranking.
Singles - Second Round: J Ferrero def. (13) G Monfils 7-5 6-3
Odd to see Juan Carlos Ferrero perform better here than in Madrid. But, of course, the clay here is red. Ferrero will probably rise above #45; Gael Monfils will not rise above his current #14.
Doubles - First Round: Almagro/Andujar def. Marrero/Verdasco 6-3 7-6(7-4)
Doubles - First Round: Granollers/M Lopez def. Bolelli/Fognini 6-3 6-4
Doubles - First Round: Melzer/Petzschner def. Isner/Querrey 3-6 7-6(9-7) 10-5 (Match TB)
Last year, Isner/Querrey had a fine clay season. But Querrey's confidence may not be as strong this year. Or maybe they just aren't as committed to doubles.
Doubles - First Round: Cabal/Schwank def. Cermak/Polasek 6-2 6-3
