Federer Gets Another Entry in the Record Books
Roger
Federer forced the re-writing of yet another page in the tennis record
books when his first round win at the French Open took the Swiss’ total
of match wins in Grand Slam events to 233 and so equaled the
achievement of Jimmy Connors.
Williams Loses and Becomes a Philosopher
Serena
Williams says everyone has their problems and losing in the first round
of the French Open just happens to be hers. The 13-time major winner
added that she has more than enough worries on her plate but will carry
on.
"I know
of her story, we all have stories," said the American who had never
before lost in the first round of a 46 previous majors. "I almost died
(blood clots in 2011) and Venus is struggling herself (auto-immune
disease)."
Umpire Asderaki Again Plays Big Role in Williams Match
Once
again, umpire Chair Umpire Eva Asderaki played a big role in one of
Serena Williams matches. Last year at the US Open, the experienced
official gave Serena a point penalty in the first game of the second set
of her 6-2, 6-4 final round loss to Samantha Stosur at the US Open.
On
Tuesday in Paris, Serena's 4-6 7-6(5) 6-3 loss to Frenchwoman Virginie
Razzano -- her first Grand Slam defeat in the first round in 47
appearances -- Asderaki was also very active, frequently coming down
from the chair to check ball marks and overruling calls, a couple which
went against Williams. The French Open, which is played on clay, does
not employ the line calling system Hawk-Eye.
Nadal Insists He Won’t Play on Madrid Blue Clay Courts
As
Rafael Nadal successfully began his campaign for a seventh French Open
title, Madrid tournament owner Ion Tiriac was sitting just a few feet
away from the champion of Roland Garros as he patrolled the baseline at
the Presidential Tribune end of Court Philippe Chatrier. But a few weeks
on, the rift between the two men over Madrid’s blue clay court remains
immense and apparently insurmountable.
McEnroe on Isner
US
Player Development chief Patrick McEnroe is pretty confident that John
Isner can do damage at Roland Garros.
But
McEnroe cautioned that Isner does not always get up for non-marquee
matches.
