Saturday Men's Tennis Summary

Roland Garros
Singles - Third Round: (2) R Nadal def. E Schwank 6-1 6-3 6-4
A pretty valiant effort by Eduardo Schwank, really. It would seem to imply the possibility of a real singles comeback. Rafael Nadal still needs a lot more than this to keep the #2 ranking.

Singles - Third Round: (4) A Murray def. T Haas 6-7(3-7) 6-3 6-0 6-0
Andy Murray won't move above #4 here, but at least he seems to be finding some form at last.

Singles - Third Round: (6) D Ferrer def. (27) M Youzhny 6-0 6-2 6-2
David Ferrer still trails Tomas Berdych in the contest for #6, but he looks like he really wants to make the semifinal at least. Mikhail Youzhny will probably be #30 or #31.

Singles - Third Round: (8) J Tipsarevic def. (29) J Benneteau 6-3 7-5 6-4
Janko Tipsarevic keeps his lead on Juan Martin del Potro in the contest for #8; Julien Benneteau will probably be just above #30.

Singles - Third Round: (12) N Almagro def. L Mayer 6-4 6-1 6-3
One more win and Nicolas Almagro passes Gilles Simon to reach #12.

Singles - Third Round: (13) J Monaco def. (19) M Raonic 6-7(5-7) 6-3 6-7(5-7) 6-3 6-4
Milos Raonic will end up just short of the Top Twenty.

Singles - Third Round: (17) R Gasquet def. T Haas 6-7(3-7) 6-3 6-0 6-0
There are so many still-active players ranked around #20 that this doesn't guarantee Richard Gasquet's Top Twenty spot, but it's a fair bet.

Singles - Third Round: (20) M Granollers def. (WC) P Mathieu 6-4 6-4 1-6 4-6 6-1
Neither of these guys can seem to manage a quick match. But Marcel Granollers is one win from the Top Twenty. So he still has a shot at the Olympics.

Doubles - Second Round: (1) Mirnyi/Nestor def. Hanley/Kerr 6-1 7-6(7-0)
Mirnyi/Nestor are looking strong, but they still need a lot more to keep the #1 ranking...

Doubles - Second Round: (2) Bryan/Bryan def. Dlouhy/Mahut 6-0 6-2
...and the Bryans certainly don't seem inclined to be generous.

Doubles - Second Round: (3) Llodra/Zimonjic def. Lu/Soeda 6-3 6-3

Doubles - Second Round: Elgin/Istomin def. (7) Paes/Peya 6-4 6-1
Astounding -- and deadly to Leander Paes's Top Five hopes. Which in turn is good news to Llodra/Zimonjic, although this by itself didn't assure them the #5 and #6 spots. Here is how we currently show the Top Ten:

1..(3) Bryan..............7890
1..(3) Bryan..............7890
3..(1) Mirnyi.............7630
3..(1) Nestor.............7630
5..(5) Llodra.............6580
6..(6) Zimonjic...........6560
7..(7) Paes...............6375
8..(8) Fyrstenberg........5995
8..(8) Matkowski..........5995
10.(10) Lindstedt..........5200
10.(11) Tecau..............5200
Doubles - Second Round: (12) Butorac/Soares def. Sela/Volandri 6-3 6-2

Doubles - Second Round: (15) Lipsky/R Ram def. Becker/Kubot 4-6 6-4 6-3

Doubles - Third Round: (14) Bracciali/Starace def. (4) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski 7-6(7-4) 6-3
No Top Five spot for Fyrstenberg/Matkowski, either. Which means that Michael Llodra is ow sure to be at least #5.

Doubles - Third Round: Dodig/Melo def. (8) Melzer/Petzschner 6-3 6-1
Melzer and Petschner will remain below #15.
