ROLAND GARROS
Paris, France
Women's Wednesday Tennis Summary
Roland Garros
Singles - Quarterfinal: (2) Maria Sharapova def. (23)
Kaia Kanepi 6-2 6-3
What this would have been like had Kaia Kanepi not been
so nervous we can hardly guess. But Kanepi clearly was
nervous, and never put up much of a fight. We show her
ending up at #16 -- meaning, incidentally, that Sara
Errani will be #14.
Singles - Quarterfinal: (4) Petra Kvitova def. (Q)
Yaroslava Shvedova 3-6 6-2 6-4
Unlike the preceding, this was a genuinely close match.
But Yaroslava Shvedova looked like she got nervous on
key points. Still, you could see how relieved Petra
Kvitova was to get through it.
That gives us a very high-stakes semifinal between
Kvitova and Maria Sharapova. If Sharapova wins it, she
is #1 and is in her first French Open final; if Kvitova
wins, she rises from #4 to #3 and has the chance for her
second Slam.
Doubles - Semifinal: (4) Errani/Vinci def. (12)
Llagostera Vives/Martinez Sanchez 6-4 6-2
There really isn't any question about who is the best
team of this clay season. What an amazing run for Sara
Errani, who is in the singles semifinal and the doubles
final! We show Errani and Vinci moving past Peschke/Srebotnik
to the #3 and #4 rankings:
1..(1) HUBER ............. 9590
1..(1) RAYMOND ........... 9590
3..(8) ERRANI .............7340*
4..(9) VINCI ............. 7340*
5..(3) PESCHKE ........... 7305
6..(4) SREBOTNIK ......... 7305
7..(5) SHVEDOVA ...........6155
8..(6) KING ...............6115
9.(12) KIRILENKO ......... 5690*
10..(7) VESNINA ........... 5450
Mixed Doubles - Semifinal: Jans-Ignacik/S Gonzalez def.
(5) Vesnina/Paes 7-6(7-2) 7-6(7-3)
This is an even bigger upset under Mixed rankings than
under ordinary rankings (since Vesnina/Paes would have
been seeded higher). This seems to prove just two
things. First, that anything can happen in mixed, and
second, that Elena Vesnina is really not likely to win a
major.
Mixed Doubles - Semifinal: (7) Mirza/Bhupathi def.
Voskoboeva/Bracciali 6-4 6-2
Obviously less of a surprise than the preceding.
Mirza/Bhupathi have been here before....
