Australian Men Shocked to Be Out of Wimbledon Competition
Australia
has the greatest tennis history of grass court success in the world with
iconic names figuring on the All England Club’s honor board such as
Laver, Hoad, Sedgman, Cooper, Fraser, Emerson, Newcombe, Cash and most
recently Lleyton Hewitt. But for the first time since 1938 the nation
from Down Under doesn’t have a player in Wimbledon’s second round.
Simon Thinks Women Should Not Receive Equal Prize Money
Newly
elected ATP Player council member Gilles Simon is making waves even
before taking office, calling out the concept of equal prize money for
men and women.
The
Wimbledon 11th seed said that he does not support the concept of equal
pay based upon the tennis produced by WTA women. "I think that men’s
tennis is really ahead of women’s tennis at this stage,” he told French
radio France Info. "Once more, the men spent surely twice as much time
on court as the women at the French Open.

Olympic Happiness and Controversy
The
Olympic teams were announced on Tuesday, with some players overjoyed
that they were given wild cards and some upset that they didn’t get
their just do. Austrian Tamira Paszek, who just won Eastbourne, was not
named as she did not fulfill her Olympic eligibility requirements.
Australian Lleyton Hewitt was named in singles, but did not get the call
in doubles.
" I am
disappointed," Hewitt said. "I can't work that out for the life of me. I
guess playing as much Davis Cup as you do doesn't count for everything."
