SUNDAY REVIEW – TSONGA BATTLES BACK TO WIN TITLE; BOPANNA/FLEMING
VICTORIOUS • World
No. 8 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga captured his 10th ATP World
Tour title and second in Marseille, adding to his 2009
triumph. • Tsonga came back from match point down to
beat Berdych. The Frenchman also saved five match points
in his quarter-final victory over Bernard Tomic. Tsonga
is the first player to win an ATP World Tour title
saving match point(s) in two different matches during
the same tournament since Sam Querrey in Los Angeles in
2010. • Tsonga ended a three-match losing streak to
Berdych, notching his second win in six meetings with
the Czech. • Rohan Bopanna and Colin Fleming lifted
the doubles trophy on their team debut.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga: “This is a great victory. I
stayed in the match even when it was very difficult and
waited for my chance. I survived and took my chance when
it came. I’m very happy. This shows me that I’m on the
right way. The draw was very strong here.”
On how it compares to
his 2009 Marseille title: “This victory is different from the one in 2009. Back
then I had some problems. Today I see that my work pays
off. The good thing was that I never gave up even if he
played very well and didn’t make any mistakes. I really
want to do well. I do everything every day to be at the
top which also means a lot of sacrifice.”
Tomas Berdych: “I had a few chances, but Jo was
able to serve well in the moment. That’s the sport.
Here, I lost three tie-breaks. This one was very
important. But it happens.”
Rohan Bopanna: “It’s always tough to play against
friends. Then I also want to thank my partner. He wasn’t
feeling well this morning but he came out and played a
great match.”
Colin Fleming: “It’s a great day for us. We beat
one of the best teams in the world. They played the
Barclays ATP World Tour Finals last year and I’m sure
they’ll end up there again this year.”
