Federer Loses In Madrid And Drops To Three Ranking

Italy’s leading sports newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport ran a banner headline this morning after Roger Federer was thrust out of the Mutua Madrid Open after losing to Japan’s Kei Nishikori: ``Federer does hara-kiri''

Things weren’t quite as terminal as that but Federer’s defeat against Kei Nishikori didn’t just prematurely end his title defense at the Madrid Masters 1000 series event, it also effectively relegated him back to third place in the world rankings and provided further evidence for those ready to write off the great Swiss and reigning Wimbledon champion as a spent force.

Nadal Wonders If Officials Get Scrutinized

Nadal: Why don’t officials get warnings, too?

Rafael Nadal has been against the enforcement of the ATP’s 25-secod tie violation rules since the start and he received a warning in his victory over Mikhail Youzhny on Thursday. Nadal wasn’t overly upset about it, but what does make him a little perturbed is that officials don't face the same scrutiny.

As he progresses through a depleted draw in Madrid, Rafael Nadal has been quietly dropping hints that the state of his problem knees may not be ideal.

Sharapova And Dimitrov Are Now An Item

Rumors about the latest tennis romance between Maria Sharapova and Grigor Dimitrov have been rife for several weeks but the couple has now taken their relationship public, literally. The pair have been caught by a series of paparazzi photographs kissing and cuddling in the streets of Madrid.

Robson Temporarily Working With Groeneveld

But the 19-year-old ranked 41st will also be escaping to a new life on court after splitting with her coach of nine months, the authoritarian Croatian Zeljko Krajan.

British No 1 Robson will be coached temporarily as part of her adidas contract by Sven Groeneveld, who is available to all marquee players under contract to the marque.
