Tarpischev Blamed For Being Slow to Name Fed Cup Player

The selection mess that resulted in three of Russia’s prospective Fed Cup final team for this week in Sardinia actually playing in the second tier WTA Championships or Tournament of Champions in Sofia and a junior line up eventually picked to face Italy, has been laid squarely at the feet of veteran captain Shamil Tarpischev.

According to several players who have made themselves unavailable this week, Tarpischev turned a deaf ear to their instructions to him that it was highly unlikely they would be up for selection. Others maintain they simply weren’t asked and had made other arrangements.

An Exhausted Williams Wins In Istanbul

Serena Williams was forced to battle both new world no.3 Li Na and her own exhaustion to win a fourth WTA Championships title in Istanbul her victory was arguably the most heroic and exacting win of her career, quite possibly demanding of more effort than any of her 17 Grand Slam singles titles or four Olympic gold medals.

“To end with this trophy after 40 years and after everything we had the celebration for this year, I don't know if it's written or what, but it's just really exciting. I haven't had a lot of time to think about it, but I'm happy. I'm really happy that I was able to finish it off.”

Bouchard Breaks With Tauziat

The Canadian coaching merry-go-round continues, with teenaged WTA talent Eugenie Bouchard calling time on her relationship with former French champion Nathalie Tauziat, a period in which the 19-year-old rose to her current 32nd in the world.

Petkovic Is Getting Old And Wearing Out

Amid the repeated injuries which have continually stalled her once-promising career, German Andrea Petkovic can still take heart from countryman Tommy Haas, who went through much of the same and is now tearing up the courts at age 35.
