Nishikori Breaks Longstanding Spanish Tradition In Barcelona

The Barcelona Open Banc Sabodel’s men’s singles title had been an exclusive Spanish possession every year since 2002 with Rafael Nadal winning eight times in a succession.

But Japan’s Kei Nishikori hit a surprising and withering blow against tradition by becoming the first Asian player to prevail on the clay of the historic Real Club de Tenis. And now the 24 year-old Japanese insists his next aim is to break into the ATP World Tour’s top ten, a feat never previously achieved by any player from his nation.


Federer And Basel Reach Financial Truce

Quiet Swiss diplomacy has triumphed again, with Roger Federer and Basel tournament boss Roger Brennwald putting aside their differences in the name of national tennis unity. The financial truce after last year's public slanging match over Federer's perceived high price for traditionally filling every seat at his hometown Swiss Indoors each October was concluded in time for the ATP 500 event to announce another stellar field.
