On court today…

·         2006 runner-up Rafael Nadal begins another attempt to become the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1978-80 to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same season. He plays Mardy Fish, who is currently on a six-match losing streak and has lost all three previous meetings with Nadal.

·         In another Spanish-American match-up, No. 7 Tommy Robredo faces Robert Kendrick, who led Nadal by two-sets-to-love before losing in the second round here last year. Both nations had 14 men starting in the 2007 men’s draw here, the second-highest behind France (15).

·         2002 champion Lleyton Hewitt and runner-up David Nalbandian. Hewitt, one of only two Wimbledon champions starting in the men’s draw, faces British wild card Richard Bloomfield, while Nalbandian takes on qualifier Mischa Zverev, who is making his Wimbledon debut today.

·         Novak Djokovic, who has reached at least the third round on both his previous Wimbledon appearances, faces Potito Starace. The Italian is playing his fourth Wimbledon and looking for his first victory at this event.

·         Halle champion Tomas Berdych and runner-up Marcos Baghdatis. Berdych bids to extend his four-match winning streak when he plays Nicolas Massu, who is appearing in his first grass court match of 2007 today. Baghdatis takes on Ernests Gulbis, one of four 18-year-olds in the 2007 men’s draw.

·         Two thirty-something Swedes, Thomas Johansson and Jonas Bjorkman, semifinalists here in 2005 and 2006 respectively. Johansson faces 2004 junior champion Gael Monfils, 12 years his junior, while Bjorkman starts his 14th Wimbledon against qualifier Fernando Vicente, who is on a 12-match losing streak at tour level.

·         Three-time Grand Slam semifinalist Nikolay Davydenko bids to improve on his 1-5 Wimbledon record. He plays fellow Russian Evgeny Korolev, who is making his tournament debut today.

·         Nottingham champion Ivo Karlovic, faces his fourth Frenchman in two weeks when he takes on Fabrice Santoro, competing in his 60th Grand Slam event and the fourth-oldest man in the draw.

·         Two more British wild cards, Alex Bogdanovic and Jonathan Marray. Bogdanovic faces fellow lefthander Chris Guccione, while Marray faces two-time Wimbledon semifinalist Sebastien Grosjean who is ranked 201 places higher.

·         Nadal is playing at Wimbledon for the fourth time. He reached the final here last year, losing to Roger Federer 60 76 67 63. It was the first time in the Open Era that the Roland Garros and Wimbledon finals had featured the same two men, and the first time since 1952 that it had happened.

·         Nadal was the second Spanish man in history to reach the final here, after Manolo Santana won the title in 1966. He also recorded the best performance by a reigning Roland Garros champion at Wimbledon since Andre Agassi advanced to the final here in 1999.

·         Having just won Roland Garros for the third time, Nadal now has another chance to become just the third man in the Open Era, after Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg, to win both the Roland Garros and Wimbledon titles the same year. Borg achieved the feat for three years in succession 1978-80, while Laver also did it in 1962, one of eight men to achieve this in the pre-Open Era. [For the full list of men to achieve this rare double, see page 4 of the Preview.]

·         Nadal has never lost in the first round at Wimbledon. On his debut here as a 17-year-old in 2003, he became the youngest player to reach the third round since 16-year-old Boris Becker in 1984.

·         Nadal warmed up for Wimbledon by reaching the quarterfinals at Queen’s for the second successive year. He lost in the last eight to eventual runner-up Nicolas Mahut 75 76.

·         Nadal won his third consecutive Roland Garros title earlier this month, as No. 2 seed defeating top seed Roger Federer in the final for the second year running. His 63 46 63 64 victory again ended the Swiss’s player hopes of completing a career Grand Slam. Nadal became the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to collect a third successive Roland Garros title, and just the second man for 93 years to do so.

·         Nadal’s Roland Garros triumph marked his fifth title this season. He also won at AMS Indian Wells (d. Novak Djokovic 62 75), AMS Monte Carlo (d. Roger Federer 64 64), Barcelona (d. Guillermo Canas 63 64), and AMS Rome (d. Fernando Gonzalez 62 62). He leads the tour for titles won so far in 2007.

·         Fish is playing at Wimbledon for the fifth time. He advanced to the third round here last year, retiring when trailing Irakli Labadze 62 because of sickness.

·         The third round is Fish’s best finish at Wimbledon. As well as last year, he reached the third round in 2003, losing to eventual champion Roger Federer 63 61 46 61.

·         Since making his debut here as a lucky loser in 2001, Fish has missed two years: he tried unsuccessfully to qualify in 2002, and missed the 2005 event with a left wrist injury.

·         Fish returned from injury in time for the grass court season, having suffered a freak foot injury when in Dusseldorf for the World Team Cup in May. He sprained ligaments in his foot when kicking a field goal when visiting the NFL Europa team Rhein Fire, and subsequently missed Roland Garros.

·         Fish is today hoping to break a six-match losing streak, which started with his loss in the second round at Houston in April, through first round losses at AMS Rome and AMS Hamburg, two losses in the World Team Cup, and a first round loss at Queen’s to Ivo Karlovic 63 64.

·         Fish had his best results this season in the first two months, reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open (l. countryman Andy Roddick 62 62 62) and San Jose, and the semifinals at Auckland and Memphis. Since Memphis in February, Fish has not won back-to-back matches at any tournament.

·         Djokovic is playing in his third Wimbledon. Last year he reached the round of 16, losing to No. 7 seed Mario Ancic 64 46 46 75 63, his best performance here to date.

·         In 2005, as a qualifier Djokovic defeated Juan Monaco 63 76 63 and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 36 36 76 76 64, before losing to No 9 seed Sebastien Grosjean 75 64 57 64.

·         Djokovic warmed up for Wimbledon by reaching the round of 16 at Queen’s. As No. 4 seed, he defeated Robert Kendrick 36 63 62, before falling to Arnaud Clement 26 63 64.

·         Djokovic is enjoying an excellent season. In Grand Slam play, he has lost to the eventual champion at both tournaments. He reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open, losing to Roger Federer 62 75 63 and at Roland Garros, he was defeated in the semifinals by Rafael Nadal 75 64 62.

·         Djokovic has won three tour titles in 2007: Adelaide, AMS Miami and Estoril. He also got to the final at AMS Indian Wells, losing to Rafael Nadal 62 75.

·         Djokovic achieved a career-high ranking of No. 4 on 11 June 2007.

·         Starace is playing in his fourth Wimbledon. He is yet to reach the second round at the tournament here.

·         On these previous occasions, Starace lost to No. 20 seed Tommy Robredo 64 64 64 in 2004, qualifier Gilles Elseneer 63 76 63 in 2005 and Mikhail Youzhny 60 64 61 last year.

·         Starace didn’t play any grass court warm-up tournaments before Wimbledon. Instead, he played at the Lugano Challenger on clay, reaching the semifinals.

·         Starace’s last tour level match was at Roland Garros, losing to No. 1 seed Roger Federer in the third round, 62 63 60. This matched his best Grand Slam performance to date as he also reached the third round at 2004 Roland Garros.

·         Starace reached his first career singles final at Valencia this season, losing to Nicolas Almagro 46 62 61. He also advanced to the quarterfinals at Barcelona, falling to eventual champion Rafael Nadal 62 75.

                                   12-10                                        2007 Tiebreak Record                                      3-7

·         Davydenko is playing his sixth consecutive Wimbledon. As No. 9 seed, he was upset in the first round here last year by qualifier Alejandro Falla 26 76 76 63.

·         Among all the Grand Slam tournaments, Davydenko has by far his worst record at Wimbledon. He has won just one match in five previous Wimbledon appearances, that being in 2005, when he defeated Scott Draper 76 64 63 in the first round, losing in the second round to Jonas Bjorkman 76 21 ret. (wrist injury).

·         Davydenko has reached at least the quarterfinals at each of the other three majors, going on to career-best semifinal finishes at 2005 and 2007 Roland Garros, and the 2006 US Open.

·         Davydenko’s first round victory here two years ago was one of just two tour-level grass court wins he has had in his career, from 14 such matches played. The other was at Halle two weeks ago, when as No. 2 seed he defeated Jurgen Melzer 76 46 62 in the first round, losing in the second to Florian Mayer 64 64.

·         Although Davydenko has yet to win a title in 2007 (he won five last year), he has had some good results on surfaces other than grass this season. He was semifinalist at Roland Garros for the second time, losing to Roger Federer 75 76 76, and reached the quarterfinals at the 2007 Australian Open, losing to Tommy Haas 63 26 16 61 75. Away from the Slams, Davydenko’s highlights are semifinal finishes at Doha, Rotterdam and AMS Rome, and quarterfinal finishes at Barcelona and Portscach.

·         Korolev is making his Wimbledon debut today. He plays here as a direct entrant, and has never previously tried to qualify for the tournament. Neither did he play the event as a junior.

·         At 19 years, four months, Korolev is the fifth-youngest man starting in the 2007 Wimbledon draw.

·         This is the third Grand Slam event of Korolev’s career. On his debut as a qualifier at 2006 Roland Garros, he reached the second round, defeating Andreas Seppi 64 26 36 75 61 in the first round before losing to Gaston Gaudio 63 67 64 36 64 in the second round. As a direct entrant at this year’s Australian Open, Korolev lost in the first round to eventual runner-up Fernando Gonzalez 67 76 63 62.

·         This is just the second main draw grass court tournament of Korolev’s career, at any level. He made his debut at Halle two weeks ago, defeating Stanislas Wawrinka 36 63 64 in the first round before losing in the second to James Blake 75 61. He played at Halle this year as a direct entrant, having failed to qualify there last year.

·         Halle marked Korolev’s return to action after a month out following a hernia operation, which saw him miss Roland Garros. His best tour-level results this season have been reaching the quarterfinals at Sydney and Valencia, and the round of 16 at AMS Indian Wells. Korolev has played only tour-level events or qualifying for tour-level events in 2007.

·         The round of 16 is Berdych’s best performance at any Grand Slam and he has reached that stage at all of the majors.

·         Berdych won the title at Halle two weeks ago, the first grass court title of his career. Seeded No. 4, he received a walkover from Mikhail Youzhny in the quarterfinals, defeated Jarkko Nieminen 76 64 in the semifinals and Marcos Baghdatis 75 64 in the final.

Mikhail Youzhny 64 63), and won three matches at May’s World Team Cup to help Czech Republic reach the final. He also advanced to the quarterfinals at AMS Rome before losing to Filippo Volandri 62 63.

·         Berdych is one of 13 players in the 2007 Wimbledon men’s singles draw to hold at least one grass court title.

·         This is Massu’s eighth consecutive appearance at Wimbledon. His best performance to date was reaching the third round in 2001 where he lost to Andre Agassi 63 61 61. Last year, seeded No. 31, he lost in the first round to Andy Murray 61 64 64.

·         Like last year, Massu did not contest a Wimbledon warm-up event and this is his first grass court match of the year.

·         Massu’s third round appearance at 2001 Wimbledon is the only time he has won back-to-back matches on grass.

·         Massu’s standout result this year was winning four successive matches to reach the final at his home tournament Vina del Mar. He defeated Albert Montanes 61 63 in the semifinal before losing to fellow South American Luis Horna 75 63 in the final.

·         In Grand Slam play this year, Massu lost in the first round at the Australian Open to Novak Djokovic 61 61 60 and lost in the second round at Roland Garros to Igor Andreev 63 36 63 75.
