Matt Ebden is on the brink of a welcome return to the world’s top 100 after defeating Jordan Thompson to win the 2015 Latrobe City Traralgon ATP Challenger on Sunday.

“It’s good to win on home soil,” Ebden said. “I always play good tennis in Australia. I love being home.”

The West Australian looked in control throughout the match, requiring only a single break of serve in each set to record a comfortable 7-5 6-3 victory in just 73 minutes.

“He’s been serving really well and winning plenty of matches,” Ebden said of Thompson, who is currently playing some of the best tennis of his fledgling career.

“But I was dominant on my serve as well, and the key was to just stay up and aggressive.

“I found my way in a few return games and played a few good points when it mattered. That’s what it came down to.”

After returning from illness and injury, the 27-year-old, who has been ranked as high as world No.61, has found a consistently solid level during the back half of this year; among other noteworthy results include winning an ATP Challenger event in Surbiton and making the final in Ilkley, both in the United Kingdom.

He carried this form through to Traralgon this week, winning the title without the loss of a set.

“It was a great way to finish the week,” he said. “I’ve been working hard since the US Open, and it’s nice to put on five matches in a row here, that’s for sure.”

Earlier in the day, Victorians Dayne Kelly and Marinko Matosevic took out the doubles title. The wildcards proved too strong for unseeded youngsters Omar Jasika and Bradley Mousley, posting a 7-5 6-2 victory.
