Roger Federer Stan Wawrinka Tennis News

Stan Wawrinka was not thrilled after losing against Roger Federer in the semi finals at the ATP Finals. However, the 30 year old had a terrific season. Two years ago, he had not won a major before, but now, he was won the 2014 Australian Open and the 2015 French Open. He will end No. 4 and he believes that next year, he could go higher.

“The year is amazing again. I didn’t expect to play that well, to be here tonight, honestly, being No. 4, winning one Grand Slam, semifinal again. I couldn’t expect more,” Wawrinka said. “I won two titles for the first time in my career, one French Open title beating No. 1 player [Novak Djokovic. Did two semifinal, US Open, Australian Open. Quarter Wimbledon. I was quite consistent at the high level. I beat so many top guys.”

Wawrinka was very happy when he upended his other Swiss Roger Federer in the quarterfinals at the French Open, but he has now lost 18 matches and won only 3 contests. He has beaten Federer on clay, but he still has been unable to take him on the hard courts.

In 2014 in the ATP Final, he was right there in the semis, but lost 7-6(6) in the third set.

Last Saturday night, he was up 4-2 in the first set at the ATP Finals in London, but very quickly, Federer jumped on top of him and ended up winning 7-5 6-3.

If Wawrinka wants to go further in 2016, he needs to tighten up his groundstrokes.

“There is many reason. In the past maybe few matches that I could have beat him, but I was maybe a little bit too nervous,” Wawrinka said. “Last year I had the opportunity to take the match, but I didn’t. Don’t know why. In general, his game is tough for me. I will say he has the perfect game against my game. He’s mixing a lot, he’s serving well, he’s putting a lot of pressure, playing so fast. Not only he has the game that is the worst for me, if I look against the top guys, but also until two years I was 20 in the world, he was No. 1, beating everybody. So it’s a little bit normal.”
