BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy Tennis News

Tennis billionaire Ion Tiriac continues to struggle with authorities in his native Romania, with the former player from the 1970s who has built a European business empire over the decades.

The clay tournament due to start on April 18 could now be in danger if Tiriac carries through with his threat to retire the event’s ATP license due to a lack of suitable infrastructure at the crumbling Communist-era sports center where the tournament is held.

The BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy, named in honor of Tiriac’s lifetime friend and former rival Ilie Nastase. is seeking a new venue, with Tiriac’s organization charging that the current The Progresul Arena is close to collapse.

“The poor infrastructure has prevented us from taking the tournament to the next level, ATP 500,“ Tiriac complained to local media. The fading arena was built decades ago and was said to have been cobbled together in just a week.

The squabble with bureaucracy is not the only one which Tiriac is facing on the sporting front. He is also embroiled in a disagreement over a proposed hockey arena for the capital which he had been prepared to build but which has been delayed for years due to government
