The Acapulco tournament does not know if it can extend its contract to stay at its long-time location of the Fairmont Acapulco Princess, a top resort in the region.

Though there is still an existing agreement to use the resort facility, the tournament is having difficulty discussing a renewal because it cannot locate the resort owner.

“We are talking to. . . the manager here, but we do not know who the owner is really,” according to Alejandro Burillo of the Pegasus Group, in a published interview for a Mexican group.

Being played at  the luxury resort also helps the tournament attract players, who enjoy the popular vacation spot. The tournament would like to develop its facilities, which would require permission from the owners.

“Of course we want to stay here, but we need to have a site [where we can] build a stadium,” he said.

But tournament organizers have a good relationship with the Governor of Guerrero, the region where the tournament is played, which could help them get a deal.

“We have a big relationship with the governor — with the previous one we did not… but we knew who the owner of the hotel was and now we do not,” he said.

The local population also would like the tournament to stay, he added. “We are very successful here,” he said. “They do not want us to relocate because of the economic benefit to everyone here. Restaurants, clubs, taxi drivers.”

The Pegasus Group are the owners of the tournament.
