Top seeds Deiton Baughman of the United States and Hans Hach of Mexico put an end to the run of wild card entries Adam Gustavsson of Sweden and David Warren of the United States top capture the doubles title while the top two seeds in singles fell in quarterfinal action on Day Four of the Texas Tamale Company Houston Cup at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on the campus of Rice University in Houston.
Baughman and Hach lost only two games to the pair of Rice University players, closing by winning the last eight games to wrap up the title, 6-2. 6-0.
Baughman also advanced to the semifinals in singles and as the third seed, emerged from Friday’s action as the highest remaining seed after the top two fell.
Top seed Eric Quigley of the United States was dispatched by fifth seed Michael Mmoh of the United States., 6-3. 6-1, who will face Baughman in one of Saturday’s semifinals. Baughman moved on with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Peter Nagy pf Hungary.
Qualifier Rishab Ararwal of India advanced over second seed Eric Reid of Australia. Arawal won a tight first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (6) and was leading 3-0 in the second when Reid withdrew. Arawal will face off against Luis Gomez of Mexico, who knocked out his second consecutive seeded opponent in three sets, posting a 7-6(1) 2-6 7-5 win over sixth seed Wil Spencer of the United States. s
Singles semifinal play will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
