Chennai Open Tennis News

The regional government of Tamil Nadu, China has renewed its sponsorship of the Chennai Open.

The sports minister provided the tennis federation with the funding previously committed to the event, which stands at about $300,000. That amount makes the government a platinum sponsor of the event.

The tournament first began receiving funding in 2005, starting with $150,000, which was then increased to $300,000 in 2012. Between 2005 and 2009, the government was the lead sponsor of the event.

It then secured telecom company Aircel as a title sponsor for about $750,000, though the company first intended not to renew in 2013 and likely reduced the amount when it did agree to stay on as title sponsor.

The event has a budget of about $1.8 million.

The top players entered are defending champion Stanislas Wawrinka and Kevin Anderson.
