WTA Rising Star Garbiñe Muguruza put one foot in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global with a straight set triumph over Angelique Kerber on Wednesday evening.

Both players had won their opening round robin outings, but it was Muguruza that kept her immaculate record intact, prevailing, 6-4, 6-4, in an hour and 39 minutes.

Having taken the first set with a run of three straight games, Muguruza broke decisively in the eighth game second when Kerber sent a backhand pass wide. Moments later she was at match point, scything away a backhand volley to claim victory in emphatic fashion.

The Spaniard has proven to be a thorn in Kerber’s side on several other occasions in 2015, winning tight encounters at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and Wuhan.

“Every time I step on the court against Angelique I know it’s going to be difficult, so I just have to give my best if I’m going to get the victory,” Muguruza said.

“I’m really motivated to be here because it’s my first time in Singapore singles! So I really want to come here and win all the matches I can and hopefully go far.”
