Agnieszka Radwanska Tennis News

Agnieszka Radwanska is giving out major mixed messages as the Pole calls for a shorter WTA season on the one hand while setting up to play the December IPTL exhibition event on the other. In the meantime, the No. 6 is dedicating her energies to fighting for a spot in the year-end finals in Singapore, playing this week in Tianjin, China.

Radwanska has made no secret of one desire: “I think nine months season will be good. I think a lot of people agree with me. Everybody wants that. But it’s just the way it is.”

But the Pole put the lie to her pleas after signing with the IPTL’s showcase Indian Aces team headed by Rafael Nadal, with Radwanska, Gael Monfils, Ivan Dodig, Sania Mirza, Rohan Bopanna and retired veteran Fabrice Santoro serving as supporting cast.

Players who say the regular season is too long have no troubles in getting worked up for a quick-hit payday offered by the off-season team tennis caper in Asia.

But American media report that new WTA boss Steve Simon might be out to try and make changes in the calendar after taking over from Stacy Allaster who retired to pursue a less stressful lifestyle.

Critic say that the annual rash of injuries and retirements which mar nearly every autumn season on the WTA and to a lesser extent the ATP should somehow be dealt with, But each year, the lure of easy money drives players into the arms of willing promoters.

“We have to look at the structure and give [players] that opportunity to get calculated rest so, as much as possible, they can finish the end of the year as strongly as they began the year,” Simon told ESPN.

“We have to evolve and continue adjusting in ways that make sense. Our athletes are our product and if they’re not on the court, we don’t have a product.”
