Carla Suarez Navarro, who has played Fed Cup with Conchita Martinez as captain, sees the former Wimbledon champion also doing well as Davis Cup captain.

Martinez was appointed to lead the men’s Davis Cup team following the controversy regarding the selection of Gala Leon Garcia, who was Spain’s first female captain but criticized by the players for having a lack of experience. Suarez Navarro agreed that the federation had not had enough consultation with the players, and said that the players getting together led to the changes in both federation president and Davis Cup captain.

“They don’t ask to us, are you really happy or do you want to change, in this case, the Davis Cup captain,” said Suarez Navarro. “It’s difficult but we have a meeting, boys and girls, at Wimbledon. Now they change the president.”

The 10-ranked player from the Canary Islands, who is playing Stanford, said the men would also confer on whether they want Martinez kept on.

“When they are finished with Davis Cup they are going to talk and see if they want Conchita for the next year or if they want another captain only for Davis Cup,” she said.

Suarez Navarro sees her being able to fill both Fed Cup and Davis Cup positions, as the two are played in different weeks. “But it is true Conchita will have more. She is going to US Open, she will have to watch the men first,” said the Spaniard, referring to Spain’s Davis Cup tie against Denmark following the tournament, “but also we have three or four girls.”

Rafael Nadal has indicated he will play the tie against Denmark if chosen.
