Heading into the US Open with a world No. 4 ranking and growing confidence, Caroline Wozniacki looks the picture of tennis health, The Dane has also revealed that she has well and truly put behind the 2014 surprise telephone break-up with golfer Rory McIlroy which momentarily crushed her 18 months ago.

“I am so much further along in my life, and I’m so much happier now. I don’t think there is a reason to go back,” the 25-year-old told the New York Post as the Open start approached. “Obviously, that relationship taught me so much and made me the person I am today, but at this point, I am like, I’ve moved on, Rory has moved on, and I’m ready for the media to move on.”

Wozniacki kept a dignified silence despite her broken heart, relying on good friend Serena Williams and others for solace as she healed. She also immersed herself in other activities, including setting a decent time in the New York Marathon, which she ran for a children’s charity.

A few months after the 10-minute telephone split, she finally told her side of the story: “I didn’t really have a choice because obviously Rory made it really public from the start. Everybody was asking me questions and expecting me to say something. I just thought it was more important for me to talk out loud once and get it over with.”

Wozniacki has won only a single title in Kuala Lumpur earlier in the season, and can boast only a modest 2015 grand slam event best of a Wimbledon fourth round. But slow and steady has been the name of the game for her this season as the former No. 1 recovers her form and confidence. “I’ve achieved so much and won so many tournaments. I’m privileged to be where I am.

Wozniacki took time out in her tennis preparation, taking a page from the playbook of women’s marketing queen Maria Sharapova and making time for a fashion shoot in long evening dresses for the New York tabloid. “I almost killed myself walking down the stairs (in the dress), but apart from that, it went pretty smoothly,” she confessed.
