Flavia Pennetta started back tracking almost immediately after dramatically declaring her US Open title triumph would be her farewell to tennis.

Within minutes she has amended her statement to say she would complete her 2015 obligations and now the Italian is perhaps looking even further ahead.

By virtue of the ranking points she earned by winning her first major at the age of 33, Pennetta will still be sufficiently highly ranked come next August to warrant a place in the Olympic singles draw in Rio de Janeiro.

And it certainly appears as though she is having second thoughts about laying down her competitive racket. “I cannot tell you how I am going to feel in February or January,” she said. “If I feel I want to play, I play. I don’t have to keep just one decision because I said something.”

Pennetta was beaten by Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the third round of the China Open in Beijing, losing 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. However she is still on course to qualify for the season-ending WTA Finals in Singapore and will play at next week’s Tianjin Open in a bid to secure her place.

However more mystery was shoveled into her plans when she added: “Of course, I would like to finish the year. I’m here because I would like to finish in the high way I can do, and then it’s over.”
