The new WTA grasscourt event to be played at Mallorca has signed up top Spaniard Garbine Muguruza to be its biggest name.
“We are very proud to present a strong players field in the first tournament edition with Garbine Muguruza in the lead plus other international top players,” said organizer Edwin Weindorfer. “This guarantees a highly attractive program for tourists and residents of the island – especially with the night sessions.”
The 22-year-old player reached the Wimbledon final this season and will use the $250,000 event to get ready for her next appearance at the Championships. ”It’s always very special to compete in a tournament on home soil. I am very happy to be part of the first edition,” she said.
It will be the first WTA grasscourt event in Spain. The organizers also own the ATP event at Stuttgart, which recently switched to grass from clay, and will be using a similar process for the courts at this event.
