Dow Corning Tennis NewsNo. 1 seed Madison Brengle survived a tough three set match against fellow American Asia Muhammad at the Dow Corning Tennis Classic today.

Brengle took an early 4-2 lead, but the momentum quickly shifted as Muhammad fired in two aces and took the first set 6-4.

In the second set, it looked like that momentum was going to continue, but Brengle was able to find the baseline and improve on her ground strokes. She converted three out of five break points and was able to take the set 6-4.

In the final and decisive set, both players played a tight and powerful game. Throughout the match Muhammad converted an astonishing seven out of seven break points, but Brengle was not going to go down easy. In the tie break, Brengle came out victorious winning the match 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(4).

“I’ve had an incredibly hard first round and you can’t look past the first round. I don’t think rankings necessarily reflect how good these players are”, said Madison Brengle.

Muhammad is currently at a career high ranking of No. 220 in the world and comes into the tournament after winning the doubles title at the Tennis Championships of Maui just last week.

“She’s such a good mover and I felt like she could get back anything”, said Brengle.
Brengle most recently made it to the third round of the Australia Open where she lost to  eventual champion Angelique Kerber 1-6, 3-6. Brengle holds seven singles titles and six doubles titles on the ITF Women’s Circuit.

Brengle will now face Veronica Cepede Royg the second round tomorrow. Cepede Royg defeated wild card Taylor Townsend 7-6(3), 1-6, 6-3, in a tough three set match yesterday. Cepede Royg is looking to collect her 15th ITF Women’s Circuit Singles title.
