Odlum Brown VanOpen Tennis News

The Odlum Brown VanOpen in Vancouver, one of the more prominent combined challenger events on the circuit, will no longer be held.
The tournament chairman, Floyd Hill, who ran and financed the event since it began, said in a statement that he had “decided to take a step back” from the tournament “to spend more time with my family and have the opportunity to pursue some other areas of personal interest.”

The tournament began as a $25,000 women’s ITF event in 2002, won by Maria Sharapova. It added a men’s event in 2005, and had become a combined $200,000 event that regularly attracted some pro tour regulars in its field as well as crowds of 3,000. Canadians like Milos Raonic, Vasek Pospisil, a former champion, Eugenie Bouchard and Aleksandra Wozniacki have played the event, as did players like a young Andy Murray and Marcos Baghdatis.

Most recently, Dudi Sela and Johanna Konta won the event.

The tournament was played in the Hollyburn Country Club. It also had a sizeable amount of corporate backing for its size — in addition to the title sponsor, it also counted Miele & Trail Appliances as presenting sponsors.
