ATP Leaderboard Tennis News

The ATP and Infosys (NYSE: INFY), a global leader in consulting, technology, outsourcing and next-generation services, have launched a new statistical way to measure the best performing ATP World Tour players across three key categories – Serving, Returning and Under Pressure. These new stats and ratings are now live on www.ATPWorldTour.com.

The new ATP Stats LEADERBOARDS ratings for each category are provided through Infosys’ management of ATP’s extensive database. The three categories can be broken down by surface, by year, by past 52 weeks or by career.

Chris Kermode, ATP Executive Chairman & President, said: “These new statistics offer players, fans and media interesting new insights into how our athletes are rating in three key areas against their peers on the ATP World Tour. There is huge potential to understand our sport better through the development of new statistics, and we look forward to further advances coming soon in this area through our partnership with Infosys.”

U B Pravin Rao, Chief Operating Officer, Infosys, said: “The uniqueness of our partnership with the ATP World Tour lies in being able to challenge the traditional models, and experiment and embrace technology to create a compelling experience for fans across the globe. Powered by Infosys Information Platform (IIP), an open source data analytics platform, this new ATP Stats LEADERBOARDS, focuses on the basics – services, returns and under pressure, and harnesses the power of big data to rate players in a whole new dimension. We firmly believe that technology can amplify our ability to create this unique differentiation and we will continue to find newer avenues to elevate the fan experience.”

Analysing data from 1991 to the current day, ATP Stats LEADERBOARDS enable players, media and fans to see how current players perform in these three critical categories and how they compare to greats of the past.

The Service LEADERBOARD rates players by adding their performance in four key service metrics and their average number of aces per match and subtracting the average number of double faults per match.

The Return LEADERBOARD is determined by adding a player’s winning percentage in the four service return categories. The Under Pressure LEADERBOARD is calculated by adding the percentage of break points converted and saved, percentage of tie-breaks won and percentage of deciding sets won.

A look at this week’s ATP Stats LEADERBOARDS on ATPWorldTour.com shows that, based on the previous 52 weeks of action, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic heads the Return and Under Pressure LEADERBOARDS. Canadian Milos Raonic, known for his ability to erase break points seemingly at will with his thunderous serve, is second in the Under Pressure LEADERBOARD.

Croatian Ivo Karlovic heads up the Serving ratings, which also show Nick Kyrgios improving his 2015-year-end standing of 11th to a current 52-week standing of 9th. On return, Kyrgios has also jumped from 65th at the end of 2015 to 24th.  These LEADERBOARD ratings help to explain why Kyrgios is just one spot off his career-high Emirates ATP Ranking of No. 20 and why Raonic this week has broken back into the Top 10.

The new ratings are just the beginning of a wave of new statistical and analytical ratings that will be launched on ATPWorldTour.com in coming months in partnership with Infosys.
