Mikael Tillstrom Tennis News

Gael Monfils has hired a new coach, the Swede Mikael Tillstrom.  Jan de Witt coached the former top 10 player Monfils, but they split around the US Open.

The Frenchman Monfils has reached Roland Garros twice in the semis, and he has been able to upend the top competitors, such as Roger Federer, but the 29 year old has yet to win a major.

A former player, Tillstrom works for the “Good to Great” Academy. Tillstrom isn’t the only Swede who is coaching at the academy: the former No. 2, Magnus Norman, is the main man helping the world No. 4 Stan Wawrinka. Nicklas Kulti is also a coach, who helps the ATP player, Daniel Brands.

They also coach one of the WTA players, Rebecca Peterson.

Now, Monfils is hoping to turn his game around.

“I’m looking forward to start working with Mikael and the Academy. I’m sure that this collaboration will bring my level on top,” said Monfils.

Monfils is currently ranked No. 19. After he lost to his fellow Frenchman Gilles Simon in the third round at Wimbledon in five sets, he lost early at Canada, Cincinnati and then he retired in the first round of the US Open. He hasn’t played since.

Monfils says that one day, he can win a Grand Slam.

“Yeah, ” Monfils said. “And I will. I’m 100% sure. It’s small details. I’m not that far.  I need to fix small details and I will do it.”

Monfils will play the ATP Vienna tournament next week.
