Two-time defending National Junior College Athletic Association Division I men’s and women’s national team champions ASA College sit atop the men’s and women’s 2015-16 Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Junior/Community College Fall National Rankings, as announced today by Oracle and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Both ASA squads are coming off an impressive 2014-15 campaign, as each held onto the top position in the rankings all season. The ASA women swept all nine individual NJCAA individual championships, becoming the first team to do so since 1991, while the men garnered six singles titles.
Seminole State College, which finished 2014-15 No. 4 in the men’s rankings, begin the 2015-16 season in the No. 2 position. Rounding out the top 5 in the men’s team rankings are Tyler Junior College, Seward County Community College and Mesa Community College, respectively.
The women’s top 5 looks very similar to the men’s, with Tyler Junior College No. 2 and Seminole State College No. 3, followed by State College of Florida and St. Petersburg College in the No.’s 4 and 5 spots.
Individually, Ferran Calvo of Tyler is the No. 1-ranked men’s singles player. Calvo won the JUCO men’s singles title at the 2015 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships in Sumter, South Carolina. ASA Miami’s Callum Polland-Smith and Nicolas Rouanet are No. 2 and 3, respectively, followed by Guy Iradukunda of Seminole State at No. 4 and Ryan Brough of Tyler at No. 5.
Macarena Olivares of ASA Miami, who ended the 2014-15 season as the nation’s top-ranked player, opens the 2015-16 season in the same position. The defending NJCAA national champion won the JUCO women’s singles title and reached the Super Bowl singles final at NSCC. Tyler’s Gabrielle Andrews, Seminole State’s Luis Varon, State College of Florida’s Iulia Sergheena and ASA Miami’s Tyler Smith complete the top 5.
In doubles, Seminole State’s Iradukunda and Ismael Mzai are the top-ranked men’s team. They won the JUCO doubles title at NSCC. Women’s doubles is led by the ASA Miami duo of Olivares and Megane Bianco.
