Hopman Cup Perth Tennis News

Nick Kyrgios and Daria Gavrilova have won Australia’s first Hopman Cup title since 1999 defeating Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov and Elina Svitolina 2-0.

Gavrilova got the team off to a perfect start with a 6-4 7-6(6) win over world No.19 Svitolina in the first rubber before Kyrgios claimed victory over Dolgopolov 6-3 6-4 to seal the tie and the title.

The last time Australia won a Hopman Cup title was in 1999 when Mark Philippoussis and Jelena Dokic defeated Sweden’s Jonas Bjorkman and Asa Carlsson.

At this time Gavrilova was 4-years-old and Kyrgios was three-years-old.

The last time Australia ever reached the final was in 2003, when Lleyton Hewitt and Alicia Molik were defeated by Serena Williams and James Blake of the United States.

20-year-old Kyrgios remained undefeated this week in Perth with wins over world No.2 Andy Murray (GBR), Alexandr Dolgopolov (UKR), Alexander Zverev (GER) and Kenny De Schepper (FRA), also combing with Gavrilova for an unbeaten doubles run.
