Sales have tripled for Yonex Switzerland since Stanislas Wawrinka’s French Open victory, with the racket and clothing manufacturer set to also benefit from the success of former No. 1 Martina Hingis and promising teenager Belinda Bencic.

The company has a racket deal with Hingis and a clothing and racket deal with Bencic.

But it is Wawrinka who has provided the biggest boost so far, with ‘Stan the Man’ t-shirts hot sellers at the Davis Cup tie in Geneva. What the company lacked however, were the bottom halves to go with it — the distinctive grey and red checked versions that Wawrinka made infamous at the French Open.

The initially criticized design became an international best-seller as Wawrinka went all the way to the title. But the CEO of Yonex Switzerland, Philipp Kurz, had ordered only a few hundred when buying stock the previous year, hardly anticipating the following the questionable attire would acquire. A few more were received from Yonex’s central office in Japan, but hardly enough to meet demand at the flagship store in Switzerland. “The phone rings constantly,” he told a local newspaper.

At the Davis Cup tie, the 10 pairs at the booth were sold for $92USD within minutes on the first day of play. And the key ring version had not yet arrived in the country.

A bigger order will definitely be placed for Wawrinka’s clothing next season, though the No. 4 is not giving details. “Something exciting,” he said.

Wawrinka re-signed a $20 million deal with Yonex a year ago.
