Five of the top six seeds in singles moved into the quarterfinals while the doubles final will see a meeting of the top seed against a wild card entry after the completion of the third day of action at the Texas Tamale Company Houston Cup at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on the campus of Rice University in Houston on Wednesday.

Eric Quigley and second seed Matt Reid advanced for the second straight day with straight-set wins. Quigley dispatched of Nathaniel Lammons of the United States, 6-3, 6-1 while Reid raced to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Pedro Scocuglia of Brazil.

Third seed Deiton Baughman of the United States  held off Alexios Halebian of the United States 6-3, 7-6(5).   Fifth seed Michael Mmoh of the United States dropped  Darius Florin Bragusi of Romania,  6-1, 6-2. Sixth seed Will Spencer of the United States  needed a third set tiebreak to eliminate Alex Rybakov of the United States 6-3 4-6, 7-6(4).

Lucas Gomez of Mexico  recorded the only upset  of a seed in singles, outlasting fourth seed Thales Turini of  Brazil, 2-6 6-2 6-2

Adam Gustavsson of Sweden and David Warren of the United States continued their doubles run as a wild card by breezing to a 6-1, 6-2 win over fourth seed Vitali Reshetnikov of Russia  and Mikhail Vaks of Russia .

They will face the tourney’s top seeds, Deiton Baughman of the United States and Hans Hach of Mexico in Friday’s final.  Baughman and Hach advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 win over third seeds Patrick Davidson of the United States and Matt Reid of Australia.

Singles quarterfinal play will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday while the doubles final is set for 2 p.m.
