Petra Kvitova won two Grand Slam events and she was once close to gaining No. 1. But the 25 year old has been ill once again over the past few months and now the No. 5 isn’t sure if she can win a few matches, much less win a major tournament.

Just after Wimbledon, Kvitova found out she had mononucleosis. She was pleased that she finally found out why she was so tired, but she isn’t sure when she will be 100 percent. The Czech has been sick frequently since 2012.

“It’s tough to talk about because I don’t know how I’m going to feel every day,” said Kvitova told the Norwalk Hour. “There are still days when I don’t feel my best. For me, I really don’t know how I’m going to feel tomorrow.”

The Czech won the 2011 and 2014 Wimbledon, but this year, she was unpredictable. She upset the No. 1 Serena Williams in Madrid in May and won the tournament, but after that, she skidded, losing in the fourth round at the French Open, and being stunned by Jelena Jankovic at the All England Club.

After she met with her doctor and found out she had  mono, he said that she could try to play tennis again, but that doesn’t mean that she could be extremely fast right off the bat.

In Toronto, she lost easily against Vika Azarenka in the first round and in Cincinnati, she went down against Caroline Garcia in the first round.
She is hopeful that she can win a couple matches in New Haven, but she isn’t sure. Maybe tomorrow, or next month, or even next year. She doesn’t know.

“It’s a challenge,” she said. “I still have kind of this feeling that I can do it, but I can’t really do anything about it. I just have to stay focused on what I’m doing. I’m still getting very tired, still sleepy. I’m definitely not over it. It’s taken some time, I just don’t know how long.”
