Roger Federer Tennis News

After opening his Swiss Indoors home week with an efficient and satisfying first-round thrashing of Mikhail Kukushkin, Roger Federer will now show no mercy to a good friend and rival he has beaten all ten times they have played.

The intended victim is German Philipp Kohlschreiber, who will be facing the world No. 3 for the second time this season after a close call four months ago on grass in Halle.

“I’m very happy with this performance, especially to play so well here at home. I was seeing the ball as big as a melon,” said Federer after spending less than an hour in his first-round victory at the event he has won six times.

Federer said victory was the only solution after he lost in an opening match this month in Shanghai as defending champion. “I’m very pleased for a first round win, especially after Shanghai. To come out and play positive tennis was good fun today.”

With Kohlschreiber next in the queue, Federer is ready. “The next match will be a bigger challenge and a different challenge against Kohlschreiber. He’s got different weapons that Kukushkin.

“If you have beaten someone 10 times there is the possibility that the next time you could have a loss. But having that kind of a record is always good for confidence. I have a lot or respect for Philipp, he trains hard and has practiced with me in Switzerland. He could have beaten me in Halle this year.”

Federer is competing for the first time since losing an opening match in China a fortnight ago in a Shanghai surprise. The 34-year-old has won six times at his home venue and is looking to reach a 10th straight Basel final.
